Executive segment loses sheen

“With the cost of depreciation as high as 50% in just three years, these cars are losing sheen to individual buyers and are mainly catering to corporate honchos who do not have to shell out from their pockets”

Strange Mystery Announcement! Coming in Soon

OK…there’s something going on in England right now…something mysterious. A lot of famous influential people (including our favorite Albert) have purchased £1,000 tickets to some dinner in London. Some are paying up to £50,000 for their cut of (hopefully, carbon-neutral) steak.

The purpose of the dinner is to launch some new, fantastic, global warming cure. Some kind of "climate safe" energy source that will…of course…save the world. The estimated net worth of everyone at the dinner is $100 billion…which is a little bit staggering. I’m starting to think they should’ve charged more for the tickets.

All statements about the technology are extremely vague. Apparently it’s a breakthrough in "microtechnology," which makes us skeptical. I almost didn’t write this post at all, for fear that it was just another in an extremely long line of "free energy" scams. But the people who are touting it are intelligent, wealthy and influential. It’s hard to imagine the wool being pulled over so many eyes.

But we’ll try to be subjective here…and if you want to keep pressing "refresh"…we’ll keep updating the below as news comes in.

  1. Prime Minister Gordon Brown kicked off the event with a remote video on the U.K.’s future commitment to climate mitigation…and said he was investigating whether they could cut emissions by 80% before 2050.
  2. Gore launched into his keynote, saying he was grateful for Brown’s leadership, and wishing "that was the case in my own country."
  3. No word on the "breakthrough" yet…though the effing rich and famous, probably know about it by now, since it’s like 11:00 pm in London.
  4. Is it possible that they got too drunk on $200 bottles of wine to send out a press release? Yes…yes, I think it may be…we’ll have a full post when the news comes out.
  5. OK…I give up…it’s now 9am in London and I’ve still got nothing. I’m sure we’ll all find out eventually…but I guess this isn’t as earth-shattering as the press before hand implied. I’m going to sleep.

Cars from Cashews! A Waste of Cashews?

While not being new news, this car is definitely worth writing about, especially given our recent visit to the LA Auto Show, which of course showcased some of the "green" and not-so-green cars coming down the road.

The Eco One, a project undertaken by the WMG, part of University of Warwick in England, had some pretty lofty green aspirations when it came to vehicle contruction, but they certainly pulled it off. Their goals are best left to Dr. Kerry Kirwan, their bio-materials expert, to describe:

"The concept for the Eco One project was simple: create a high-performance racing car that had a conscience. We researched the most technologically advanced sustainable materials available, and then used them wherever possible during construction."

While most auto manufacturers have tunnel-vision, focusing only on fuel as an environmental issue, the Eco One is green as a package deal. Sure, it runs entirely on biofuels, and its oil and lubricants are plant-based, but how about a shell made from hemp, cashew nut shell brake pads, and tires made partially with potato starch? (I’d be interested to know if you could actually eat the car in case of emergency.)

Open Question: 1996 Toyota Corolla has starting problems when wet and cold.?

I have a 96′ Toyota Corolla that for a while has had problems starting in cold and wet weather, I would get in and turn the key but nothing would happen, it didnt even sound like the fuel pump was firing. I would pump the gas pedal until finally it would sputter and eventually start with a enough nudging. I did this for about 4 weeks or so until this week when It wont even try to start. Ive replaced the fuel pump as well as the distributor and tried rewiring the fuel pump to no avail. I had to buy a 1995 distributor to fit the car so I may be working with an early model for 96… please help me Im at a loss as to whats causing my problems and im stranded at home until I figure it out. Thanks.

Open Question: 2007 Toyota Corolla-Air Bag Stolen From Car-Car Won’t Start-HELP!!!!?

The airbag was stolen from the car-the window busted out. The battery was tampered with, clearly-my radio stations and clock time are reset-that’s how I can tell. The car won’t turn over completely to where I can drive it. The car only has 3,000 miles so I’m sure it can’t be anything other then something to do with the ignition. Holidays coming up and I’m trying to avolid my $500 deductible. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Can the airbag taken cause the car not to start? Desperatley need advice!!!

Drive, she said
