Open Question: Do automatic 4 cyl Toyota Tacomas really get 25 MPG?

I just saw a commercial last night for the ‘08 Toyota Tacoma and the text at the bottom of the screen said that the 4cyl standard cab Tacoma with an automatic transmission gets 25 MPG. Is this true? I thought that the 2.3L Ford Ranger was the only truck with an automatic transmission to get this kind of gas mileage?

Don’t 4 cyl Tacomas use a fairly big 2.7L engine? Can someone explain this mess to me? BTW, my brother-in-law owns a ‘98 4 cyl Tacoma with a 2.7L engine and a manual transmission and he only gets about 16-17 MPG highway. That’s why the commercial peaked my interest. 25 MPG just sounds too good to be true.

I’m asking because I’m obsessed with getting great gas mileage, but at the same time I can’t stand driving cars. I love the durability and ease of driving a mid-size pickup.
His truck is a 4WD. BTW, I’d like to add one more question. How is it possible that a 2.7L engine (Tacoma) can get slightly better gas mileage than a 2.3L (Ranger)?
